KIVA

Online KIVA Access is available for members of the appropriate level.

Kiva is the leading refereed serial publication in the archaeology, anthropology, and history of the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Published quarterly the journal contains articles on southwestern archaeology, anthropology and history. Past issues have been devoted to such topics as: the pottery village of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua; Anasazi origins; and the Archaic-Formative transition in the Tucson Basin. In honor of our 75th anniversary we compiled collections of the most significant articles on Pueblo (74[2]), Hohokam (75[2]), and Mogollon (76[3]) archaeology, with thematic essays by experts in each area. Theme issues that we have published since then are identified below. Most issues contain independently submitted articles communicating original research.

AAHS collaborates with Taylor & Francis to publish Kiva. To receive Kiva as a benefit of membership in AAHS individuals should go to the membership page. Electronic access to all Kiva volumes is another benefit of Kiva-level membership. Institutions should contact Taylor & Francis directly. All individuals or institutions interested in ordering back issues of Kiva should contact Sarah Herr, AAHS Publications Chair.

Kiva Editor, Volumes 91-93

The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society and Routledge copublish Kiva: The Journal of Southwestern Anthropology and History. Kiva is the premier journal of the Southwest and has published peer-reviewed articles about archaeology, anthropology, history, and linguistics since 1935. The journal has a circulation of approximately 550, which includes regional, national, and international distribution, with access through Routledge (a subsidiary of Taylor & Francis Publishing) and JSTOR. The journal is indexed by SCOPUS and the Emerging Sources Citation Index. The Society is now accepting applications for the position of Kiva editor. Editorial teams will also be considered.

The editor spearheads the publishing process by working with a book reviews editor and Routledge’s editorial, production and marketing team. Routledge is responsible for the publication of Kiva, including production, distribution, sales, and marketing. Although the Society is based in Tucson, the editor is an independent contractor and may reside elsewhere. The editor has a working relationship with the Society’s Publications Committee and Board of Directors through a contract covering three volume years. Responsibilities of the editor include maintaining the established high quality of the journal. External advice and consultation are available through an Editorial Advisory board appointed by the editor. A graduate student internship to assist with journal promotion and editorial tasks is currently in development.

The editor accepts and solicits manuscripts and coordinates the review, editing, and proofing of four issues per volume year; each issue is about 120 printed pages. Specific duties include maintaining communication with authors, reviewers, the occasional guest editor, the book reviews editor (who is appointed separately), communications and marketing staff, and the Publications Committee. An online submission and refereeing site uses Editorial Manager software to facilitate article tracking and publication. Editors interface with Routledge staff and subcontractors who maintain the software, and Routledge provides some training for the system.

The contract is renewable and payable in the amount of $2,500 per issue, upon completion of each issue ($10,000 per year). The ideal candidate has a background in Southwest archaeology, history, ethnography, or a related discipline.

Applicants: Start date is January 2025. Please submit a letter of interest and curriculum vitae no later than July 1, 2024 to Sarah Herr, sherr@desert.com. Subject line: Kiva Editorship

This is an equal opportunity contract not affiliated with the State of Arizona
