Classic Northern Sinagua Sites – Flagstaff

June 11, 2022 - June 12, 2022

Immerse yourself in Sinagua and Southwestern history while spending a day and a half in Flagstaff with Coconino National Forest Service Archaeologist Peter Pilles. On Saturday we will visit Elden Pueblo (65 room excavated pueblo, Hopi ancestral site, Elden phase 1150-1250, type site, dug by Fewkes), Turkey Hill Pueblo (22 room pueblo, Turkey Hill phase type site, 1250-1300, dug by Cummings & Haury),  Winona Village (several clusters of pithouses arranged around trash mound & ball court, type sites of Angell/Winona/Padre phases 900-1100), Ridge Ruin (17 room pueblo, 2 ball courts, Magician’s Burial, 1150-1250), and Fewkes’ Youngs Canyon Group (5, 4-15 room pueblos strung along side of wash). All of these are easy walks and close to Flagstaff. If we have time there are plenty more sites to visit.

The groups interest will determine Sunday’s itinerary but one option is Anderson Mesa, 20 mi. E. on I-40 and 15 mi. S. on  a good graded road.  Options there include Padre Fort ( walled promontory with 6-10 rooms inside, 1150-1250), or Anderson Fort (1150-1250, walled hilltop, some petroglyphs), Pershing Site (excavated pithouse cluster, 750-925), and Piglet Site (extensive pithouse site, 850-1000 and 5 room pueblo). All these sites involve more hiking and climbing. We will plan to finish up by 2 pm on Sunday.

The tour is limited to 20 people and you must be an AAHS member to participate. To register contact Katherine Cerino
